Preparing for Surgery & Procedures

Clear guidance on what happens before, during, and after procedures — helping you feel informed, prepared, and reassured.

Introduction

If surgery or a procedure is recommended, preparation helps ensure it is carried out safely and that recovery is as smooth as possible. You will be given clear, procedure-specific instructions in advance. Following these closely reduces the risk of complications and helps you recover sooner.

Before Surgery

In the days leading up to surgery, you may be asked to:

  • Follow fasting instructions carefully if a general anaesthetic is planned

  • Review your medications — some may need to be paused or adjusted

  • Stop smoking, as this improves healing and reduces anaesthetic risks

  • Maintain reasonable activity and hydration, unless advised otherwise

You may also attend a pre-operative assessment to review your health and anaesthesia plan.

On the Day of Surgery

On arrival, you will be admitted and checked in by the nursing team. The anaesthetist will meet you to confirm the anaesthetic plan and answer any final questions. After the procedure, you will be monitored in the recovery area until you are comfortable, alert, and stable before returning to the ward or being discharged.

After Surgery & Recovery

After surgery, care focuses on comfort and safe recovery:

  • Pain is managed using appropriate medication

  • You will be encouraged to mobilise early where suitable

  • Instructions will be given regarding activity, fluids, and diet

  • You will be advised on warning signs such as fever, increasing pain, difficulty passing urine, or bleeding, and when to seek help

Written discharge advice is provided before you leave.

Hospital Stay vs Day-Case Procedures

Many urological procedures are performed as day-case surgery, allowing you to go home the same day. Others require a short hospital stay for observation and recovery. This depends on the type of procedure, your overall health, and how you recover immediately afterwards.

Footer Notes

Recovery times vary between individuals and procedures. It is normal for progress to be gradual rather than immediate. If you are unsure about any aspect of your recovery or experience unexpected symptoms, contact your care team promptly for advice.
